17 The history of the Biloxi Lighthouse in Mississippi is a tale of resilience and endurance. The lighthouse, originally built in 1848, stands as a testament to the region's maritime heritage. Throughout its existence, the lighthouse has weathered numerous challenges, including hurricanes, wars, and technological advancements. In fact, it is one of the few lighthouses in the United States that has remained active since its inception.
The Biloxi Lighthouse has witnessed significant events in the area's history. During the Civil War, Confederate forces temporarily extinguished the light to avoid aiding Union vessels. In 1947, Hurricane Camille battered the Gulf Coast, leaving the lighthouse battered but still standing. Over the years, the lighthouse has undergone restoration efforts to preserve its historical significance and iconic stature.
18 The Round Island Lighthouse, situated off the coast of Pascagoula, Mississippi, has a captivating history that stretches back to the mid-19th century. Constructed in 1859, the lighthouse was strategically positioned to guide ships safely through the treacherous waters of the Gulf of Mexico. It served as a beacon of hope and a crucial navigational aid for mariners traveling along the Mississippi Sound.
The lighthouse, made of cast iron, withstood the challenges posed by hurricanes, including the devastating Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which left the structure in ruins. Despite its resilience, the Round Island Lighthouse was decommissioned in 1941 and left abandoned for several decades. In recent years, passionate individuals and organizations have rallied to preserve and restore this historic landmark, recognizing its significance as a testament to the maritime history of the region
