20 Fall Color Trip - Day 8
Mackinaw City to Detroit
The New Presque Isle Lighthouse, located on the shores of Lake Huron in northeastern Michigan, was constructed in 1870 to replace the original 1840 Presque Isle Light, which had become outdated and inefficient. Standing at 113 feet tall, it became one of the tallest lighthouses on the Great Lakes and was built to aid in navigating the hazardous waters around Presque Isle, a peninsula that juts into Lake Huron. The new lighthouse was designed with a more advanced Fresnel lens, providing a brighter and more reliable light that could be seen from a much greater distance, crucial for ships navigating the treacherous coastline.
For nearly a century, the New Presque Isle Lighthouse was manned by keepers, who maintained the light and helped guide vessels safely along the shore. In 1970, the lighthouse was decommissioned, and its role was replaced by modern automated systems. However, it remains an important historical and cultural site.
